An Austin Fence Repair Company That Also Builds Fences
A fence that leans, has missing boards or a gate that won’t latch is more than an eyesore. It can let pets out, cause friction with neighbors, and get worse with every storm. Often the fence doesn’t need to be replaced: new posts, boards or gate hardware can put it back in good shape. Most of our fence repair jobs run $450–$2,100. See what affects the price in our Austin fence cost guide.
Sagamore Fence & Deck has built and repaired fences since 2007, with more than 18,000 projects for nearly 10,000 clients. Because we build fences too, we can tell you honestly whether a repair makes sense or whether a new wood fence is the better value. We’re based in Georgetown and repair fences throughout Austin, and estimates are free.

Our process
How Our Austin Fence Repairs Work
INSPECT
We look at the whole fence, not just the broken section, checking the posts, rails, boards and gates for rot, leaning and loose hardware.
RECOMMEND
We explain what we found, tell you whether a repair or a replacement makes more sense, and give you a free estimate.
REPAIR
We reset or replace posts, replace boards, pickets and panels, and repair or realign gates.
FINISH
We match the existing fence as closely as we can and clean up when we’re done. If you’d like, we can stain the fence too.
Repair or Replace? What Austin’s Rules Mean for Your Fence
Small repairs are usually simple, but bigger ones can bring the City of Austin’s fence regulations into play:
- The more-than-half rule. Under the city’s safe-fencing rules, in effect since July 31, 2023, replacing more than half of an existing fence brings the whole fence under the current standards, including the ban on spiked pickets above the top rail.
- When a permit is required. A fence needs a City of Austin permit if it’s in a floodplain, more than 7 feet high at any point, or more than 6 feet high along a public street.
- Height on property lines. A solid fence on a property line can be up to 6 feet high from natural grade, or up to 7 feet where the grade changes by at least 1 foot.
- Trees. Trees 19 inches or more in diameter can require a city tree review before work near them.
- Utilities. A repaired or rebuilt fence can’t block utility meters or wastewater cleanouts.
- Shared fences. If the fence sits on the line between you and a neighbor, read our guide to fence repair between neighbors in Texas.
What We Repair
- Leaning posts. Loose, leaning or rotted posts reset or replaced.
- Boards and panels. Broken, warped or missing boards, pickets and panels replaced.
- Gates. Sagging or dragging gates repaired and realigned, with new hinges and latches where needed. We also build new gates; see gate installation.
- Storm damage. Downed sections, snapped boards and loosened posts after high winds or heavy storms.
- Removal and replacement. When a fence is past saving, we remove it and build a new one.

When Replacement Makes More Sense
Sometimes a fence has more problems than a repair can fix. Replacement is usually the better choice when:
- Many of the posts are rotted at the ground, not just one or two.
- Most of the fence leans, or sections keep coming loose after repairs.
- The fence is near the end of its life. A cedar fence typically lasts 12 to 20 years.
- You want a different height, style or material.
- More than half of the fence needs replacing anyway, which brings the whole fence under Austin’s safe-fencing rules.
We’ll tell you which way we’d go and why. Read fence repair vs. replacement, and if a new fence is the answer, see wood and privacy fences in Austin.
Fence Damaged in a Storm?

Austin Fence Repair FAQs
Can a leaning fence be fixed without replacing it?
Often, yes. If the boards and rails are still sound, we can reset or replace the leaning posts and straighten the fence. If the posts have rotted and most of the fence is leaning, replacement is usually the better value.
What types of fences do you repair?
We repair wood, chain link, ornamental iron and vinyl fences, along with walk and drive gates.
Do I need a permit to repair a fence in Austin?
It depends on the fence. In Austin, a fence needs a city permit if it’s in a floodplain, more than 7 feet high at any point, or more than 6 feet high along a public street. If you replace more than half of an existing fence, the whole fence has to meet the city’s safe-fencing rules.
Should I repair or replace my fence?
Repair makes sense when the damage is limited to a few posts, boards or a gate. Replacement is usually better when many posts are rotted, most of the fence leans, or the fence is near the end of its life. We’ll give you our honest recommendation.
Can you fix a gate that drags or won’t latch?
Yes. We repair or replace the hinges and latches, square up the gate and realign it so it swings and latches properly.
Do you repair storm-damaged fences?
Yes. After high winds or a heavy storm, we repair downed sections, broken boards and leaning posts, and we’ll tell you if the fence is better off replaced.
Are fence repair estimates free?
Yes. We look at your fence, explain your options and give you a free estimate.
