The Short Answer

Most fence projects we build in the Austin area fall in the ranges below. They’re typical Sagamore project totals from recent Austin-area jobs (2024–2026), not quotes. Your price depends on your yard, and every project gets a free written estimate.

ProjectTypical Sagamore project total
Wood privacy fence$2,400–$10,000
Ornamental iron fence$1,800–$7,800
Fence repair$450–$2,100
Gate project (new walk or drive gate)$800–$5,400

Some projects come in below or above these ranges. A small repair or a single walk gate sits at the low end. A long run, a taller fence, several gates, or a sloped and rocky lot pushes a project toward the top or past it. We price each project as a whole job, so your estimate covers the fence, gates, removal and anything else your yard needs in one number.

Sagamore Fence & Deck builds wood, iron and pool fences, gates and decks across Austin and Central Texas from our base at 6550 FM 1105 in Georgetown. Our promise is simple: Built Right. Priced Fair. Planned Well. Trusted.

How we price a fence

From Site Visit to Written Estimate

VISIT

We walk the fence line with you, talk through privacy, pets, pools and style, and look at slope, rock, trees and access.

MEASURE

We measure the run, mark gates and corners, and note anything that changes the build, like an old fence to remove or a grade change.

ESTIMATE

You get a free written estimate with one project total that spells out materials, height, gates, removal and hardware. No per-foot guesswork.

BUILD

Once you approve it, we handle HOA paperwork and permits when they’re needed, schedule the crew and build it to last.

What Drives the Cost of a Fence in Austin

Two fences that look alike from the street can have very different price tags. These are the things that move a fence project up or down:

  • Length. The total length of the fence line is the biggest factor. More fence means more posts, more material and more labor.
  • Height. An 8-foot privacy fence uses more material and heavier posts than a 6-foot fence.
  • Material and style. Board-on-board, horizontal boards, cap-and-trim and steel posts change the cost of a wood fence. For iron, a standard panel system costs less than custom fabrication.
  • Gates. Each gate adds hinges, latches and framing. Wide double drive gates and automatic gate operators add more. See our gate installation page.
  • Slope, rock and access. Much of Central Texas sits on limestone, and rock can make post holes slower to dig. Slopes call for stepped or rackable panels, and tight side yards take longer to work in.
  • Old fence removal. Tearing out and hauling off an old fence is part of many replacement jobs.
  • HOA requirements. Many HOAs set the height, style, stain color or which side faces out. We prepare the documents your HOA asks for. See HOA and permit approvals.
  • Permits. Some fences need a city permit or design review, depending on the city, height and location.
  • Pool code. A fence that’s part of a pool barrier has to meet height, spacing and gate rules. Our pool fence code guide covers Texas law and city rules.
  • Stain and sealing. Staining a new wood fence protects it from the Texas sun and adds to the total. See fence staining and sealing.

Wood vs. Iron: Which Fence Fits Your Yard?

Wood privacy fences are the most common fence we build in Austin. Cedar gives you full privacy and a warm look, works with horizontal or vertical boards, and pairs well with black steel posts. Wood does need care: stain and sealing every few years keep it from graying and drying out in the sun. See our wood fence and privacy fencing pages, or wood privacy fences in Austin.

Ornamental iron fences keep the view open. They’re a common pick for front yards, pools, sloped lots and properties with a view, and they need less upkeep than wood. Rackable panels follow a slope, and custom fabrication is available when a project calls for it. See our ornamental iron fence page.

Many Austin yards use both: iron where you want the view and wood where you want privacy. We’ll price both options in your estimate if you’re not sure.

Repair or Replace?

A repair often makes sense when the damage is limited: a few broken boards, one or two leaning posts, a sagging gate, or storm damage to one section. Most repairs we do run $450–$2,100.

Replacement usually makes more sense when rot has spread along the fence, several posts are leaning, you’re repairing the same fence every year, or the fence no longer gives you the privacy or security you need.

Permits, HOAs and Pool Code

HOA approval. If your home is in an HOA, plan on getting the fence approved before we build. We prepare the drawings and details your HOA asks for. Learn more about HOA fence approval.

City rules. Fence rules depend on the city, the fence height and where it sits on the lot. In Georgetown’s historic district, a fence can need design review first. See our Georgetown historic district fence approval guide.

Pool fences. A fence around a pool is a safety barrier with its own code. Read our pool fence code guide and see pool fence installation.

We check the rules for your address during the estimate and include any permit work in the plan.

When Is the Best Time to Build a Fence in Austin?

Late winter and spring are our busiest months. Once the weather warms up, many homeowners call at the same time, and schedules fill up.

Fall and early winter are a good time to plan. You get more room to compare options, get HOA approval and handle permits, so your fence is ready before spring. Wood and iron fences can be built in Central Texas through the cooler months, weather permitting.

These are typical ranges, not quotes. Your price depends on length, height, material, gates and site conditions, and every project gets a free written estimate.

Our recent wood privacy fence projects in the Austin area typically ran $2,400–$10,000. Length, height, board style, gates, old fence removal and stain all affect where a project lands.

Our recent ornamental iron fence projects typically ran $1,800–$7,800. A standard panel system costs less than custom fabrication, and gates, slope and the length of the run make the biggest difference.

Most of our fence repair jobs run $450–$2,100. Replacing a few boards or resetting a post sits at the low end. Replacing several posts or a long damaged section costs more.

Our recent gate projects typically ran $800–$5,400. A single wood or iron walk gate is at the lower end. Wide double drive gates, custom iron and automatic gate operators cost more.

No. We price each fence as a whole job, because gates, slope, rock, removal and HOA details change the cost in ways a per-foot number doesn’t capture. Your free written estimate gives you one project total.

A repair costs less up front and makes sense when the damage is limited and the rest of the fence is sound. If rot has spread, several posts are leaning or you’re repairing the fence every year, replacement is usually the better value. We’ll tell you which makes sense after we see it.

Financing is available through Wisetack, subject to credit approval. Rates and terms depend on your credit, and you can prequalify when you get your estimate.

Every project comes with our 1-year workmanship warranty, which starts at substantial completion.
